RiverPulse - a live river map of Wales

The rivers of Wales, alive.

RiverPulse is a public, live map of the rivers of Wales. Every river in the Ordnance Survey network is drawn as light that moves and brightens with the water: river levels, rainfall and tides read every fifteen minutes from Natural Resources Wales and the Environment Agency, set against each gauge's own record of readings, with the weather from Open-Meteo and long-term baselines from the National River Flow Archive.

It is an environmental information and data-visualisation website for the general public, teachers, paddlers, anglers, walkers and researchers. It is not a flood-warning service: for flood warnings go to Natural Resources Wales or the Environment Agency, and in an emergency call 999.

The map covers every named river in Wales and the English border, among them the Severn (Afon Hafren), the Wye, the Usk, the Dee (Afon Dyfrdwy), the Teifi, the Tywi, the Conwy, the Dyfi, the Clwyd, the Taff, the Rheidol, the Mawddach, the Glaslyn and the Dwyryd, together with the thousands of smaller streams that feed them.

A river's colour is its level against its own record, not a raw height: where today's reading sits in that gauge's own history of readings, which is what makes a small upland stream and a large lowland river comparable at a glance. A high percentile does not mean a channel is nearly full: at Beddgelert on the Glaslyn, with thirty-six years of record, the ninety-fourth percentile is about 1.05 m, which is 1.38 m below the highest level ever recorded there. Stretches with no gauge of their own are estimated from the gauges around them, are drawn more softly, and are always labelled as estimates.

Mae RiverPulse yn dangos pa mor uchel y mae afonydd Cymru yn rhedeg ar hyn o bryd, a pha mor uchel yw hynny iddyn nhw. Darlleniad bob pymtheg munud o gannoedd o orsafoedd monitro, wedi’i dynnu ar hyd y rhwydwaith afonydd cyfan yn hytrach na fel dotiau ar fap.
